An order to pay to Nicholas Gilman, 1776 September 20.

Thornton, pursuant to a vote of the [New Hampshire] Council and Assembly, orders Treasurer and Paymaster Nicholas Gilman to pay Matthew Patten 189 pounds for delivery to Colonel Daniel Moor to pay the men in his regiment for their service in New York and travelling expenses at two pence a mile.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff.
